THE DRAGON'S TERRITORY

The Book
The Foundation

The Dragon's Territory is a book written by our founder, John Ryan.

John undertook a several-month-long expedition to East Nusa Tenggara, targeting unexplored jungle regions on Flores Island, investigating ancient mythology and studying the Komodo dragon in its natural habitat.

The account from this expedition soon began exploring beyond just the scientific facts & statistics, as dry as the bones in our museums and entered the realms of gripping storytelling and romance of the old Victorian novels of intrepid pioneering explores. Although chock-a-block with the latest scientific facts, the veil of mystery, action, danger and poetic romance of the natural world makes The Dragon's Territory a unique literary experience for all kinds of audience. And thus passing on the utmostly important message about conservation.

The Dragon's Territory Foundation was formed as a response to the effects of the Anthropocene mass extinction on the environment of East Nusa Tenggara. Although the Komodo dragon is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, the mighty predator is not the only one suffering in this human-induced catastrophe. The destruction of the natural environment, mindless killing of wildlife, or the heavy plastic and chemical pollution are amongst some threats observed during the expedition. Larger issues are, of course also in play such as climate change or the ever-growing human population, which creates ever-rising demand for resources and space.

During his expedition, John took to the road with his trusted friend and interpreter Aldinho Dejuma and began to educate village after village on the importance of conservation and sustainability. The effects were outstanding, and herein lies the importance of education. Hence, apart from further expeditions and research trips, the Foundation's focus is primarily on the education of local people.

Carrying the book's legacy, The Dragon's Territory Foundation turns Hic Sunt Dracones - Here Be Dragons, the words of fear into the words of hope.
