EXPEDITION TO THE 'KOMODO ISLANDS'

An Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara, also known as the ''Komodo Islands,'' is an archipelago famous for its unique insular biodiversity, unexplored regions and, of course, the home of the mighty Komodo dragon, the largest lizard on Earth.

Our expedition lasted for several months and was undertaken to survey unexplored jungle regions on Flores Island and study the behavioural ecology of the Komodo dragons on the islands of Rinca and Komodo.

This expedition led to the development of the Tracking and Locating Dominant Males of Varanus komodoensis by Means of Behavioural Ecology and Patterns plan. Also, it was adapted into a true-story, adventure book, The Dragon's Territory.

Please visit The Dragon's Territory website to find out more.

This plan was developed by John Ryan as a field tool to locate the males of Komodo dragons without the need for tracking devices or other technology.

This plan was constructed with the help of up-to-date knowledge of dragon behavioural ecology, the gaps were filled with the knowledge of other Varanid species, with particular focus on the closely related Australian goannas, and the knowledge of tracking, inspired by the legendary tracking techniques of Australian Aborigines.

Nevertheless, other factors also play an important role, such as seasons, past, present, and future weather forecasts, prey composition and density, topography, etc.

John Ryan put his plan to the test several times throughout the expedition, and it proved sound. It also inspired the name of the book - The Dragon's Territory.
